In Language Arts we will be reading various types of literature. We will be focusing on strengthening literal and inferential responses to the reading. There will be many opportunities to read novels, as well as excerpts throughout the year. Some of the titles that we will be reading together are Number of the Stars, Tale of Despereaux, Maniac Magee and African Critters.
In writing we will begin the year with an essay about your goals for Fifth Grade. It is an important year with many opportunities to demonstrate respect and responsibility as the oldest students in the school. Think about how this will help you to narrow down your own personal goals. We will be writing research papers and narrative pieces throughout the school year.
In Social Studies we are learning about the events leading up to the Revolutionary War. We switch classes for Social Studies and Science. Social Studies is taught in room 17 by Ms. Pires. If you have any questions regarding Social Studies, please contact Ms. Pires at A_Pires@stoughtonschools.org
In science we will begin the year by reviewing subjects studied in the past. We will be keeping all of the experiments, readings and flashcards in a science binder. As we prepare for assessment please look for study guides and flashcards to come home for review. We will be studying earth and space, life sciences, physical science and engineering. You will be taking a Science MCAS at the end of this year. Don't worry we will prepare for it ALL year long though many experiments and lessons.
In math, we will be using the Envisions Mathematics Program. The students will access the lessons and activities on their Chromebooks daily. At the conclusion of every unit the students will be given an assessment. Once graded, it will be sent home to be signed and then returned to school. Each week the students will take math fact speed tests and complete open response questions.
